Director of Architecture

McKissack & McKissack has an immediate opening for a Director of Architecture to be headquartered in our Washington, DC office.

Your Role:
This senior leadership position provides direction and oversight for our Architecture and Interior Design disciplines and involves establishing and implementing goals and objectives, developing and promoting the Practice's values and strategic plans, and positioning the Practice for growth.

The candidate in this position will focus on growing both local and regional business relationships, and opportunities, as well as protecting and growing established markets such as local government, K-12 Education, Commercial Office and Utility Sector clients.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic direction for the Firm’s Architectural and Interior Design practice, in coordination with the company’s CEO, National Practice Leader and other company leadership
  • Plan and execute an ongoing business development strategy, which implements and achieves the strategic plan, including revenue targets
  • Responsible for the P&L of the Practice, preparing budgets and schedules, directing teams and driving excellence
  • Collaborate with the National Practice Leader to support the Practice’s market leaders in developing local, regional and national market initiatives
  • Actively participate with local, regional and national professional and community-focused organizations to grow relationships, re-introduce and educate potential clients towards the Practice
  • Participate in responding to Requests for Proposals and Interviews
  • Prepare and review proposals and contracts
  • Assist with the attraction and retaining of top talent, building on the company’s culture, providing mentoring and career progression
  • Proactively address and continually improve the technical quality and knowledge base of the team through the development of processes, identifying and providing needed training, and addressing individual performance issues.
  • Monitor projects to ensure quality and production standards are met for all design and contract documents
  • Facilitate inter-office/inter-disciplinary collaboration, communication and cooperation
  • Support a continuous learning culture by encouraging the sharing of ideas and technical knowledge through in-house presentations, case studies, mentoring and continuing education opportunities

Your Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master of Architecture
  • Active Architectural Registered Architect
  • NCARB Certification is a plus
  • Strong leadership with a minimum 15 years of progressive experience in the design, documentation, and management of architecture projects and staff resources
  • Thorough knowledge of the business of architecture with demonstrated experience leading, directing and managing people, previous Practice building experience a plus
  • Comprehensive understanding of the collaborative inter-relationships between architecture and engineering disciplines, clients, and constructors
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including ability to articulate ideas, both verbally and in writing; ability to present to leadership, clients, and other large groups; personable and outgoing in work relationships, both externally and internally; highly precise, detailed and self-organized; frank and candid during all business relationships
  • Business development experience researching and developing responses to Requests for Proposals (RFP), as well oversight of written and graphic marketing materials
  • Strong familiarity with the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia markets
