The Director of Energy will report directly to the Vice President, Infrastructure in the Washington, DC Headquarters office. The leader will be a team player, with excellent internal and external communications skills. This position plans, organizes, and directs the activities of his/ her respective area to achieve the objectives of the business to maximize returns and minimize risk for the company. Operations include design management, program management, project, and construction management. This will include the hiring/assignment of personnel that exhibits humble, hungry, and smart attributes. Responsible for teaming partners selection, and execution of the work, monitoring progress of each project to ensure financially successful resolution. This leader will demonstrate financial responsibility and savvy.

The position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to organize and present information to our clients. Specifically, the Director of Energy will be responsible for building and maintaining a network of client relationships such that we receive RFP’s for new work and repeat business from those clients and leads about other work. With the assistance of our marketing department, prepare responses to RFPs including preparation of technical fee proposals (including management and resourcing), preparation and delivery of interviews, development of marketing packages, etc. Participate in internal marketing meetings to coordinate and support business development activities with other offices and assist other offices as required in the pursuit of work.

What You'll be Doing:

  • Responsible for establishing a wide range of electrical programs and projects (Program Management, Project Management and Construction Management Services) across markets sectors including transmission (substations, overhead and underground transmission systems, generator interconnections,     interconnection strategy), renewable generation (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind), power distribution (overhead and underground power     systems, substations, EV charging networks, microgrid design, etc.), and next generation energy (hydrogen, fuel cells, electrolyzers, etc.).
  • Advance cleaner, secure, and more sustainable energy solutions.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining the primary regional conventional and renewable power delivery relationships with strategic clients, including marketing support for new opportunities, overseeing execution of projects, driving quality and delivery for that client, technical leadership, and profitability to achieve business objectives.
  • Responsible for leading Program Management, Project Management and Construction Management personnel for oversight of conventional and renewable     substation projects of variable sizes and complexity, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, project closeout, and quality control, schedule, and budget management.
  • Should understand basic project management tools and techniques including client goals and objectives, contract types and project risk, work breakdown     structures, project scope, schedule, and budget, financial management and controls, including earned value, and project closeout.
  • Drive efforts to develop and maintain standards for design of conventional and renewable energy interconnection facilities to be code compliant, cost effective,     safe and constructible standards.
  • Work with Project Engineers and Project Managers on developing design schedules and budgets for electrical projects.
  • Supervise a team of diverse Program Managers, Project Managers and Construction Managers in the completion of utility scale conventional and renewable projects, microgrid solutions and other distributed energy pursuits.
  • Coordinate with company recruiting staff and leadership to develop a hiring plan and grow the renewables group based on client and work sharing needs.
  • Establish a network of relationships with technical peers in other offices and leverage those relationships and resources in work sharing opportunities.
  • Coordinate with marketing and technical leadership for business development.
  • Comply with McKissack and McKissack quality program relative to assigned tasks.
  • Direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise conventional and renewable substation Program Managers, Project Managers, Construction Managers, and/or Project     Engineers.
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Infrastructure on execution of projects and implementation of annual plans and strategy development for program     growth as it relates to power delivery services in conventional and renewable energy.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field preferred.
  • PE license strongly preferred, PMP or CCM certification a plus.
  • Experience in management of utility-scale renewable and battery storage systems coupled with leadership experience preferred.
  • 5 years of substation project management or construction management experience required.
  • 5 years of high-power transmission line project management or construction management experience required.
  • Experience with relevant electrical studies and design of conventional and/or renewable interconnect substations, overhead and underground collection systems,     distribution lines, transmission lines, communication systems, system protection, renewable studies and planning projects is desired.
  • Experience and client relationships in the conventional and/or renewable market.
  • Strong client and project management skills are required.
  • Demonstrates leadership and communication skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Some travel may be required 25-30%.
  • Thorough understanding of fiscal and human resource management techniques.
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to produce sales and implement marketing strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to develop and present comprehensive reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and discretion.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
