National Memorial for Peace and Justice
To accommodate increased attendance at the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum and Memorial, McKissack designed a new Visitor Welcoming Center.
Located in Montgomery, Alabama, the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum needed a new visitor's center with exhibition space, food service and an auditorium. McKissack's design removed the exterior north fade and a segment of the east and west elevations. This created an opportunity to compose a new collection of architectural elements that highlighted the functional components of the Welcome Center. The powerful imagery and commanding scale of McKissack's proposed solutions created an educational destination and landmark for the EJI's Visitor Center.
