DDOT Connecticut Ave Streetscape
McKissack & McKissack (McKissack) is providing construction management services for the Connecticut Avenue Streetscape and Deckover project. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) of Washington, DC, aims to create a new multi-modal streetscape along a portion of Connecticut Avenue, one of the city’s most vibrant and major thoroughfare and commuter routes in the Dupont Circle neighborhood.
This area is a commercial destination with restaurants, bars, salons, boutiques, small businesses, national chains, hotels, religious institutions, and office buildings. Starting at Dupont Circle and continuing north to California Street NW, the innovative redesign of approximately 2,600 feet of roadway will enhance mobility, safety, and repurpose of unused existing spaces. A new deck structure over the Connecticut Avenue underpass will create a new multi-use public space for events such as a farmer’s market, outdoor movies, music, plays, and cultural events.
As part of the streetscape redevelopment, DDOT is working to further develop the appeal of this section of Connecticut Avenue for all users–drivers, walkers, bikers, tourists, and metro-users. The street redesign will include bicycle and pedestrian amenities, pedestrian-friendly traffic, and green infrastructure elements, rebuilt curbs, gutters, sidewalks and pedestrian ramps, and intersection improvements.
