Lincoln Memorial

As prime contractor for the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials, McKissack & McKissack provided design-build and program management services for the structures’ historic renovation and preservation on the National Mall.
The Lincoln Memorial stands at the west end of the National Mall as a neoclassical monument to the 16th president. The memorial, designed by Henry Bacon after ancient Greek temples, stands 190 feet long, 119 feet wide and almost 100 feet high. The side chambers contain carved inscriptions of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address. The central hall contains the statue of Lincoln. The memorial was opened to the public in 1922. McKissack & McKissack operated under an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract with the National Park Service. The firm provided design/build and program management services for physical security barriers and historic restoration to the memorial, as well as construction management -at-risk services for the roadway relocation. Moreover, it served as the prime contractor for these design/build projects under this task-order contract, to include: Lincoln Circle Rehabilitation & Design of Security Improvements As designed, the project strategically controlled the traffic flow around the memorial with road improvements to the street approaches, entry ramps and bridge approaches from Virginia. Work also included security barriers to protect the memorial from vehicular threats. The project required coordination with local agencies, permitting and a well-defined public notification process because of roadway closures. Memorial Preservation Lincoln Memorial preservation work included repairs to the masonry joints, resetting of the marble entrance steps and preservation of the frieze entablature that surrounds the monument, exterior walls, column bases, front coffer, stylobates and statue of Abraham Lincoln.
