Howard University Blackburn Undergraduate Men's Residence
McKissack provided full design services for a new living/learning residence hall at Howard University. The firm anticipates that the facility’s quality, technology, and design will yield a 100-year building. The design respects the campus's formal architectural language while advancing Howard University’s 21st-century vision.
The project site is the major northern gateway into the campus. The new residential structure will serve as a showcase, enhancing the 4th Street side of Howard’s campus. The floor plan creates two major outdoor spaces: one that interacts with the campus and one that offers a view of the picturesque reservoir. The 6-story, 179,044 SF building is designed to house 420 male freshmen in efficiencies and 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units. The design includes a fitness center, computer lab, floor lounges, common area and lounge, teaching/learning facility, and 73 underground parking spaces. Each residential floor will be subdivided into living-learning communities, such as an arts hall or science and technology hall. The plan allows open access to the two academic floors for Howard University students, faculty, staff, and visitors, while restricting access to the residential floors from a controlled security desk.
