To enhance the quality of the historic university’s housing stock and increase student retention, McKIssack & McKissack helped Howard University renovate five 1930s residence halls.
The Howard University residence halls are interconnected and surround a large courtyard. In a developer-led design-build arrangement, McKissack provided architectural design services for the total renovation of all five buildings, which included 1,300 rooms, public spaces and a new courtyard. The crown jewel of the project is a new, McKissack-designed glass entrance that anchors the complex and gives it a more compelling architectural presence. The renovation has increased the number of available modernized rooms that comprise Howard University’s housing stock, enhancing the quality of the university’s available housing.
