Butner Federal Correctional Institution
McKissack provided construction management services for the design-build construction of FCI-3 Butner.
Encompassing approximately 468,758 SF, the facility was designed to support safe, secure, and efficient operations while providing access to housing, administrative, vocational, and support services for approximately 1,100 individuals.
The campus includes housing units, administrative facilities, utility infrastructure, a firing range, warehouse space, and support buildings organized to promote effective facility management and program delivery. Construction management services also included oversight of a UNICOR warehouse, supporting workforce development and job-training opportunities.
McKissack helped ensure the successful delivery of a modern correctional campus that balanced security requirements with functionality, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability. Notably, FCI-3 Butner became the first federal prison to achieve LEED certification, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship, energy efficiency, and responsible use of resources. The project also received the 2007 Associated General Contractors Marvin M. Black Award for Excellence in Partnering, recognizing exceptional collaboration among project stakeholders.
