Pepco Substations

The District of Columbia’s primary utility company tapped McKissack & McKissack to design five urban substations—and they earned unanimous community approval.
As part of the revitalization of the electric grid, Pepco is building five new substations. All are sited in urban areas that require design approval from local constituents. This was the first time Pepco used a design firm to ensure the substations’ exteriors would fit into the fabric of the community. McKissack’s designs for the substation exteriors relate contextually to the neighborhood thanks to the firm’s deft use of contemporary materials and respect for the community’s scale and architectural vernacular.
