Pepco White Flint Substation
McKissack provided construction management services for the innovative and unmanned Pepco White Flint substation No 229.
This new substation was a significant development, designed to enhance capacity and improve the reliability of the power supply in the surrounding network. As the White Flint area anticipated substantial load growth, this substation was essential to meet future demands. The substation encompassed a footprint of 34,480 square feet, resulting in a commercial floor area ratio (FAR) of approximately 0.55, which was well below the permitted FAR of 1.5 for commercial use by the Property’s zoning. Access to the substation was facilitated by two driveways, one located on Nebel Street and the other on Marinelli Road. The line work involved both overhead and underground construction along Nebel Street, Marinelli Road, Old Georgetown Road, Citadel Avenue, Randolph Road, and Parklawn Drive. The project also included frontage improvements such as sidewalks, a Bicycle Master Plan recommendation for a separated bike lane with a protected intersection, and enhanced landscaping and lighting. The White Flint Substation was not merely a practical solution; it was a vital step in delivering energy to both existing and future families and businesses in the rapidly growing White Flint areaT
