District of Columbia Public Schools Coolidge Senior High School Modernization & Ida B. Wells Middle School Addition

McKissack advised on scope, schedule, budget, and delivery method, and managed all phases of design and construction, including safety, quality, financials, pre-construction, claims, inspections, closeout, and community engagement. Originally built in 1940 and expanded in 1987, the 318,000 SF high school underwent historic stabilization while accommodating two distinct educational programs. A 12,600 SF addition provided a separate entrance for the middle school. Two enclosed service courts now house an arts commons, shared dining area, and classrooms. Preservation efforts included restoring the cupola, replacing original windows and roof tiles, recreating a historic greenhouse, and refurbishing the auditorium. The Wells Middle School Addition was designed and constructed to meet LEED Gold certification requirements, incorporating a comprehensive suite of sustainable design features. These include a green roof on the addition, high performance energy efficient windows, and efficient mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, including LED lighting throughout. Additional sustainability measures include the use of low VOC materials to support indoor air quality and integrated stormwater management strategies to reduce runoff and environmental impact.
