The Housing Authority of Baltimore City received $30 million to redevelop the Perkins Somerset Oldtown area into a mixed-use, mixed-income community, aiming to revitalize distressed neighborhoods and ensure affordable housing, with McKissack providing design consultation to maximize value and sustainability within budget.
The Housing Authority of Baltimore City (HABC) was awarded $30 million to implement the Perkins Somerset Oldtown (PSO) Transformation Plan. Somerset – former public housing site was demolished in 2008-2009. The 244-acre PSO footprint combines portions of 5 neighborhoods. Perkins Homes which consists of 629 public housing units built in 1942. The PSO Plan will be completed in nine phases over a six (6) year period. The PSO Transformation Plan will produce critical economic stimulus for a historically distressed neighborhoods and for Baltimore City and the State of Maryland. The redevelopment of Somerset Homes into an integrated mixed-use, mixed income community will substantially improve the quality of life and mobility of current residents and ensure the preservation of quality affordable housing in Baltimore City. The revitalization of Somerset Homes will serve as a catalyst to not only transform the neighborhood but also connect it to the economically booming adjacent neighborhoods that anchor it. McKissack is providing design consultation services which includes: participating as a team member during the design development stage by making recommendations through value engineering, constructability analysis and cost estimating; review drawings and specifications prepared by the Architect and provide recommendations to HABC. The project goal is to ensure that the design achieves maximum value, constructability, sustainability and is within the project budget.
