Gateway Market Center
Once built, Gateway Market Center will be the first comprehensive mixed-use development to combine wholesale, retail, commercial, residential, and office space in the Capital City Market vicinity. The new facility’s design includes 398,900 SF, 116 residential units, and a 200-space garage.
The project will serve as a bridge linking the Market’s older warehouse character with more diverse projects scheduled for development. The NoMa-Gallaudet University Metro Station and nearby headquarters of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) encourage private-sector development. Furthermore, the city government is targeting this area for priority development, accelerating neighborhood growth. The ATF building alone has brought approximately 2,000 bureau employees to the area daily, creating demand for retail food service and shopping. Business professionals will be attracted to nearby office and residential spaces, while homebuyers and real estate investors will be drawn to the convenience of the development’s condominiums. Selecting the right project for the former Washington Beef Warehouse site was critical to advancing the City’s future goals. Development decisions have a significant impact on the protection and enhancement of the market environment. Selecting the area has long been a symbol of international heritage. It is a place where vendors and customers from many ethnic backgrounds come together to enjoy cuisines from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
